Comparative Assignment: Precedent Study & Analysis Sketch Journal + Digital Analysis Presentation

This assignment focuses on investigating historical works . Through the study of an existing building, we are introduced to basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concepts, design, ideas, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Also, this project assigned to us with the intention of helping us being able to develop historical and architectural criticism skills. And creatively and innovatively develop and expand the design concept derived from the precedent study analysis.

We are required to conduct precedent study analysis on a given specific building .This precedent study analysis clarifies the research questions of “why” the case study is historically, culturally and architecturally inspired and “how” the design concepts derived from the past have influenced and been reflected in the case study.

By extension how these can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into a prospective design project.

The building given to my group is Sultan Sulaiman Royal Mosque. It is situated in the Royal Town of Klang in Selangor. It was built in commemoration of the proclamation making Klang the centre of administration for Selangor State. Characterised by a unique typology of Western Art Deco and Neoclassical cathedral styles, making it a rather unorthodox mosque in Malaysia.

We were required to compare and contrast the architecture elements of the mosque with Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture.
