Project 1 : Defining and Documenting a Project
Project 1 : Case Study: Analyzing Passive Design Strategies
Chosen building : Suasana PJH, Putrajaya
Suasana PJH is a commercial development of offices and shop lots located at the heart of Putrajaya. It is designed by Architect Ken Yeang, and is listed as Silver rated Green Building.

Students are required to choose a building that is certified and recognized as Green Building, and best features passive design strategy for tropical climate. Students then conduct a thorough research on the passive design strategies, the principles and details needed for these passive design strategies to perform best in tropical climate and to achieve thermal comfort in this building/space.
Learning Objectives:
-
To identify environmental conditions related to site conditions, climate, etc.
-
To explain the effects of the sun on the thermal performance of buildings.
-
To explain the effect of insulation, thermal mass, shading devices and air movement on thermal performance of buildings
Reflection
Sustainability is important to maintain the equilibrium of resources, energy, human, nature, built environment, and the ecosystem. The application of the knowledge of sustainability allows architecture to reduce the negative impact of buildings on the environment, throughout the whole operation of the building life.
This case study allows me to understand the principle of passive design strategies and apply the knowledge in my studio project. The use of sun shading device as in the double-skin façade controls solar heat by protecting the building from excessive sun and together with stack and cross ventilation effects and the orientation of the building increase the energy efficiency of the office.
