Project 2 :     'Genius Loci’

Site Analysis and Design Concept  for Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC)

In this project, we were introduced to a new word, 'Genius Loci', which is the spirit, identity, meaning of a place.  The brief required us to produce an architectural response toward the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements. And for that reason, conducting a site analysis will be the starting point. The site needs to be understood, in both intuitive and personal ways, as well as quantitative and measured means.

Locating in Southern Kelantan and surrounded by jungles , Kampung Pulai is a small traditional Hakka village which is formed through the gold-mining activities in the earlier centuries. It remained in rather isolation from the outside world and now somewhat a backwater in a development-oriented society.  It has a strong subsistence-oriented economy history.

Above the Surface

Approaching the VIC via a bridge, one is in direct immersed relationship with the enveloping hospitality and liveliness of the Pulai daily culture.
