Asian Architecture.jpg

Students are required to select a contemporary building in Asia and conduct analysis on its contextual architecture elements.

Learning Objectives:

  • To integrate architectural design and research through a specific case study, supporting students’ design through extensive research within the framework of Contextual Architecture in Asia.

Selected Building : Yusuhara Marche

In the small mountain town of Yusuhara,  Japan this local produce market with a small boutique hotel is inspired by the traditional “Chado" guest rooms and tea salons. Covered in thatch, the Yusuhara Marche is a nod to the past and to the present using traditional materials in a new and efficient way. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, the building's modular thatch panels form a well insulated curtain wall and operable windows allow for natural ventilation. Inside, a large atrium sells local produce, and in the back there are 15 hotel rooms to create a vibrant space for the town.

Project 2   :   Research in Asian Architecture
