Project 1: Theorizing the Connectivity

Students are required to choose a case study city (Amsterdam and Singapore) and to explore the city in both historical and contemporary phases, and prepare digital presentations on salient and insightful ideas/theories/social situations that contributed the spatial form of the city of their study. The analysis comes from three perspectives, namely, the theoretical rigor, contextual aspects and the cultural translation into urban form.

Learning Objectives:

  • To explore various urban theories and ideas in the Eastern World.

  • To know how various social situations responded to spatial forms.

  • To acquire a holistic understanding about various historical phases of the case study cities

Steigereiland (Amsterdam)

Sterigereiland is one of the artificial islands built to help deal with Amsterdam's housing shortages. The island comprises three neighbourhoods - Noodbuurt, Zuidbuurt and Waterbuurt - the last of which is home to a number of floating houses.

 Project 2  :   Mapping the Townscape         

 

Students are required to document the spatial form of the city to note the key spatial experience that is driven by the urban form and content. They are required to illustrate the urban distinctive character by formulating their own theory of understanding, present the tales of their wishes, and evaluate through the comparison of three cities.

  • To allow the students to explore the potentiality of space, form and their relationship to aspects of use and cultural meaning.

Pasar Seni - Petaling Street

Started from the confluence of Klang River and Gombak River, the Kuala Lumpur town, the streets, and settlements slowly expand into what it is today. Pasar Seni and Petaling Street are located near the confluence of the rivers. The Kasturi Walk and Petaling Street add vitality to the street life of Kuala Lumpur. Activities and people are assembled here, experiencing the presence of other people in this create a uniquely stimulating experience in the big city like KL.
