The theme for this semester emphasizes on ‘Sensing the City’: Designing an Urban Room, creating positive spaces for people in the city. The design should demonstrate architectural interventions drawn from the needs of the people, place, and is timely and relevant, gain familiarity of the site's past, present and future. Sensing means looking at how the city, public spaces, and buildings connect us to our individual and collective identity. Likewise, create a platform to support social cohesion and create a safe and healthy environment even in this time of the pandemic. The site is located at the meeting edge of Bukit Bintang and Pudu precincts. Bukit Bintang is famous as entertainment enclave for shopping and food, boosting economy by attracting consumers and business activities. The urban studies included site analysis, project impact analysis, initial design intent, responses and precedent studies.
Project Objectives
1. Create a positive impact on immediate neighborhood, more engaging and inviting, encourage people to look, pause, stay, engage, and celebrate.
2. Compliment and heighten the quality of the urban fabric. The architecture may blend in or be a driver to enhance the image of the place
3. People-centered and activity-driven design, where spaces both external and internal encourages a unique journey and experience.
4. Create engaging design which appeals to the target user from all social status, and ethnicity. An urban place acting as a ‘neutral platform’.
Final Project
City living is full of richness, diverse populations of Bukit Bintang make variety of culture, job opportunities, eventful and exciting experiences possible every day. However, with increase of density and opportunities, comes the flipsides. Migrants and locals form 'Parallel Duality' as lack of mutual embracement, linguistic barrier, dense built environment, limited outdoor recreational activities, hectic working life, housing stress, pollution, social isolation, etc.. These conditions potentially threatening the wellness of urbanites.
Urban Living Room is conceptualized as a holistic wellbeing leisure centre for the stressed and weary urbanites. A spatial opportunity to incubate new encounters of people from different social groups in city and form a sense of communal belonging regardless of where one comes from, deepen engagement with each other culture and nature. A place that empowers the mind, skills and creativity cultivating, experience emotional relieve and physical expression. As a new community core, it serves nearby residents and visitors daily use and host events for special occasions. A supportive urban setting to rebalance for healthier lifestyle and societal happiness.
