Urban Theories Board 1
Urban Theories Board 2

Part A: Case Study (Group)

In the same group from Studio V, we were required to present an in-depth and analytical research study on an asian street, Saneha Nusorn Road from Hat Yai, Thailand. Students are to explore the idea of “Life Between Buildings Using Public Space” (1986) by Jahn Gehl. The project consists of two parts; first is a case study and the second part is to produce a comparative analysis essay.

Learning Objectives:

  • To provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case studies and theoretical studies.

  • To enhance the understanding of the complexity of architecture and the ability to undertake independent research.

Part B: Comparative Analysis Essay (Individual)

This part of the project required us to write a 2000 word comparative analysis essay based on our findings in the case study on the Asian street, Saneha Nusorn Road, Hat Yai and a local site research, Jalan Stesen 1, Klang.

We were required to examine the similarities and dissimilarities based on the patterns of social activities, types of 'contact points' and the varying degrees of contact intensity between the two cities.

 Project 2: Synopsis

We were required to individually submit a synopsis after completing a selected reading in relation to our thematic lecture discussed in class. The synopsis is done in the form of a reaction paper of the text consisting of a total of three readers.

Learning Objectives:

  • To engage students with relevant theories which have shaped cities and experience around architecture, including its role as mediator between our society and its architecture.

  • To provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case-studies and theoretical studies.
